Based on previous work with innovative light aircraft, the BD-1 (eventually developed into the American Aviation AA-1 Yankee) and the BD-2, Jim Bede designed the BD-4, the first real “kitplane” in the world. The design was based on a high-wing cantilever monoplane of conventional design, able to be fitted either with tail wheel or tricycle undercarriage, as the builder chooses.
The BD-5 was designed in 1973, and proved to be an extremely popular aircraft. The BD-5 is small and lightweight, and can be either single seat propeller or jet driven. The jet version is listed in the Guinness book of records as the world’s smallest jet. When it was introduced in the early 1970’s, it became an immediate international sensation. Before the first prototype flew, the company already had over 800 orders.
The BD-17L is a single seat LSA categroy aircraft. The simplicity of design and ease of construction make the BD-17L a great aircraft for the first time aircraft builder. Its speed, fuel efficiency, and low cost also make it a perfect time builder. The fuselage is constructed of honeycomb panels for strength and ease of construction (Just like the Yankee).The landing gear is made of S-Ply composite which is very forgiving on landing. The wings are all metal construction using Bede Aero trusted tubular spars, and can be removed easily in less than 3 minutes for storage.
